Should Your Gun Safe Feature Biometric Technology?

Posted on

If you have just taken up shooting as your pastime and now own a selection of guns and rifles, you likely already know that you can never be too careful. You also know that there are stringent rules in Australia that govern ownership of these weapons and you need to invest in a gun safe. As you start to look for the most appropriate gun safes, what technology should you adopt to ensure that you are not only compliant but ahead of the game?

Plan Ahead

To begin with, you will need to choose a gun safe that is of sufficient size for your collection. Don't be tempted to buy something that is cheap and cheerful or that may not be sufficient if your hobby grows and you may buy some more rifles.

Implement a Multistep Process

Look closely at the technology available and choose something, ideally, that requires more than one form of authentication in order to work. For example, many high-quality safes on the market today have biometric detection systems. These will record something unique about the owner, and this could be a finger or handprint, or an iris scan. They will then store that information digitally within the system, rather than simply keeping an image of the iris or handprint as a record. This will make it almost impossible for an intrepid criminal to hack.

The system may also require you to input a code onto a keypad at the same time, and you will need to get both processes right within a certain amount of time or a small number of tries, in order to gain access.

It is sometimes possible to guess a digital code and especially as people tend to pick a number that represents something tangible (and thereby memorable). It's not possible to circumvent the biometric technology, however, so your system will be as safe as current methodology allows.

Go for Cost-Effective

At one point in the past, biometric security was prohibitively expensive and especially when the technology was quite new. Today, advancements have led to cost reduction, and the solutions are now popular in the gun safe market.

Finding Your Solution

Talk with your gun safe supplier about your options. Tell them how much capacity you require, where your safe will be located and what levels of security you want. They will introduce you to a variety of different biometric safes to suit your needs.
